1. Now see/ do yourself the experiment and get known that light travels in straight line (Conclusion 1)

2. Now if we do another experiment of sending a placing a light source in front of small hole size board then after it placing a screen as Shown in Image.



then Light reaches places that are away and if light as travelled in straight line then this would not be the result of this experiment.
Here Light not travelled in straight line it bended through holes.(Conclusion 2)

From above two confusion we got confused about path of light.
But here comes the Explanation


we know that Light also a wave so due to wave nature light reaches another extreme places. we can do the same experiment using waves of water , and get the same results.
But when light meets bigger surfaces then this effect of bending around obstacles and holes(called diffraction) is negligilible. Therefore we need some approximations that governs that when the effect of diffraction is noticeable or not.


The Approximations(Ray optics Approximations) are
let a = size(diameter) of obstacle/hole
then if 1. a >> wavelength of light then light will be considered travelling in straight line path.
2. a is comparable to wavelength of light then the bending of light will be noticeable/considered.
