    Electrostatics | CHARGES
    • As Per Cathode Ray experiment  we know that every       material is composed of some tiny particles, and these particles   exhibits property of attraction and repulsion. 
    • we call one type of these particles as +ve (positive charge) and other as  - ve (negative) charge.
    • And as per observations if you take two +ve /-ve charges together they will repel and if you take one positive and other negative charge or vice versa they will attract each other.
    • so it can be stated as-  Like Charges repel each other and unlike charges attract each other. charge is measured in Coulombs (C) in S.I Unit System .
    • while in C.G.S System it is measured in e.s.u                   (electrostatic unit)
    • 1 Coulomb = 3×10^9 e.s.u
    Electrons and More 

  • Now, one of these two charge particles is -ve charge which is known as Electron.
  • Charge of an electron is  -e Where "e" is magnitude of charge of electron ,  e= 1.6x10-19  so charge of electron is -e  Coulombs.
  • The Electron is Discovered By J.J Thomson in Cathode Ray Experiment Thomson also Found The e/m charge by mass ratio for electron. and later R.A Millikan in his oil drop experiment found value of "e"which we know Today.
  • Mass of an Electron is 9.10938356 × 10-31 kg.
  • Quantization Of Charge  

    It Was Also Found That Every Charge Which independently exists  in "Stable" state always  have Charge as Integral Multiple of "e" this is know as Quantization.Q= ne , It Clears That Charge exists due to presence or absence of Discrete Particles like electrons and protons.
    there are some other subatomic particles Known as Quarks and these have  magnitude of charge = e/3  
     But these Particles are not stable they does not exist independently for long duration's.
